Food-Grade FAQs

What makes an IBC "food-grade"?

A food-grade IBC has an inner bottle made from FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant HDPE plastic that is approved for direct food contact. Additionally, for reconditioned containers, the content history must show that only food-safe materials were stored in it. We verify both the material compliance and content history for all food-grade IBCs.

Can I use a reconditioned IBC for organic products?

It depends on your certifier's requirements. Many organic certifiers require new containers or specific documentation of cleaning procedures and content history. We can provide the documentation needed, but check with your certifier first. New containers are often the safest choice for organic operations.

How do you verify content history?

We track content history through supplier documentation, container markings, and visual inspection. Containers are sourced from known food and beverage manufacturers. We maintain records of previous contents and can provide this documentation with your purchase. If history cannot be verified, the container is not sold as food-grade.

Do you provide certificates for food safety audits?

Yes, we provide cleaning certificates, content history documentation, and material compliance information that can be used for food safety audits and FSMA supplier verification. This documentation includes lot numbers, cleaning dates, and our facility information.

Can I use IBCs for allergen-containing products?

Yes, but with important considerations. If you're storing major allergens, you should either use new containers or reconditioned containers with documented allergen-compatible history. Cross-contamination prevention is critical. We can help you select appropriate containers based on your specific allergen requirements.

What's the maximum temperature for food-grade IBCs?

Standard HDPE IBCs are rated for contents up to approximately 140°F (60°C). For hot-fill applications, we recommend checking the specific temperature rating and filling procedures. Some products require cooling before filling into IBCs. We can advise on temperature considerations for your specific application.
