General IBC Questions

What is an IBC tote?

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a pallet-mounted, industrial-grade container used for storing and transporting liquids and bulk materials. They typically hold 275-330 gallons and consist of a plastic inner bottle housed in a steel cage frame. The design allows for efficient handling with forklifts and stacking for storage.

What are IBC totes used for?

IBC totes are used across many industries for storing and transporting liquids like water, chemicals, food ingredients, oils, and more. Common applications include agriculture, chemical manufacturing, food & beverage, and general industrial use.

How long do IBC totes last?

With proper care, IBC totes can last 5-10 years or more. The lifespan depends on usage, contents stored, storage conditions, and maintenance. Regular inspection and proper cleaning can significantly extend their useful life. UV exposure and harsh chemicals can reduce lifespan.

What are IBCs made of?

Standard IBCs have an inner bottle made of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), a steel or plastic cage/frame, and a pallet base (usually wood, plastic, or steel). HDPE is chosen for its chemical resistance, durability, and food-safe properties.

How much does an IBC tote weigh?

An empty IBC tote typically weighs 100-150 pounds depending on size and construction. A 275 gallon tote full of water weighs approximately 2,400 pounds, while a 330 gallon tote weighs approximately 2,900 pounds when full of water.

Can IBC totes be stacked?

Yes, most IBCs are designed to be stacked 2-3 high when empty and 2 high when full (depending on contents and manufacturer specifications). The steel cage provides structural support. Always check the maximum stacking weight listed on the container.

Sizes & Specifications

What sizes of IBC totes do you offer?

We primarily stock 275 gallon and 330 gallon IBC totes, which are the most common sizes. Both have the same 48" x 40" pallet footprint - only the height differs. We can also source specialty sizes upon request, including 110 gallon mini-totes.

What are the dimensions of a 275 gallon IBC?

A standard 275 gallon IBC measures approximately 48" length x 40" width x 46" height. The fill opening is typically 6" in diameter, and the bottom outlet is usually a 2" ball valve.

What are the dimensions of a 330 gallon IBC?

A standard 330 gallon IBC measures approximately 48" length x 40" width x 53" height. It has the same footprint as the 275 gallon but is about 7 inches taller, providing 20% more capacity in the same floor space.

Which size should I choose: 275 or 330 gallon?

The 275 gallon is more common and works in most standard warehouses. The 330 gallon provides 20% more capacity in the same footprint, ideal for maximizing storage. Consider your ceiling height, forklift capacity (full 330s are heavier), and whether the extra capacity justifies a slightly higher cost.

What type of valve do IBCs have?

Most IBCs come with a 2" ball valve (butterfly valve) at the bottom for dispensing. We can replace valves with different types or sizes upon request, including camlock fittings, quick-disconnect fittings, or different valve materials for chemical compatibility.

Food Grade

What makes a tote "food grade"?

Food-grade IBC totes are made from FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant HDPE materials approved for food contact. Additionally, for reconditioned containers, the content history must show only food-safe materials have been stored. They must be properly cleaned to food-safe standards.

Can any IBC tote be used for food storage?

No. Only totes specifically designated as food-grade with documented clean history should be used for food storage. Using non-food-grade containers can contaminate contents. Never assume a container is food-safe - always verify before use.

How do you verify food-grade content history?

We verify content history through supplier documentation, container markings, and visual inspection. Containers are sourced from known food and beverage manufacturers. We maintain records of previous contents and provide this documentation with your purchase.

Should I buy new or reconditioned for food applications?

New containers are recommended for the most sensitive applications (allergens, organics, baby food, pharmaceutical ingredients). Properly reconditioned food-grade containers with verified clean history are suitable for many food applications and offer significant cost savings.

Do you provide food safety documentation?

Yes, we provide cleaning certificates, content history documentation, and material compliance information for food-grade containers. This documentation can be used for food safety audits and FSMA supplier verification.

Chemical & UN Certification

What does UN certification mean?

UN (United Nations) certification indicates that an IBC has been tested and approved for transporting hazardous materials. UN31HA1 is the common designation for composite IBCs, indicating HDPE inner container with steel cage. The certification specifies approved hazard classes and packing groups.

Do I need a UN-certified tote?

UN certification is required if you're transporting hazardous materials by road, rail, air, or water. Check your chemical's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for shipping classification. If it has a UN number and hazard class, you need appropriate UN-rated packaging. Storage-only applications may have different requirements.

How long is UN certification valid?

UN certification typically expires 5 years from the date of manufacture for new IBCs. After this, the container can be reconditioned and re-certified if it passes inspection and testing. The certification date is marked on the UN label.

Can you help with chemical compatibility?

Yes, we can help verify compatibility between your chemicals and our HDPE containers. We maintain compatibility charts and can consult with you on special requirements. For unusual chemicals, we recommend testing with a sample before full-scale use.

🔧

Maintenance & Repair

How do I clean an IBC tote?

Basic cleaning involves rinsing with water. For thorough cleaning, use appropriate detergents based on previous contents. Never mix chemicals without checking compatibility. Food-grade applications require professional triple-wash cleaning. We offer professional cleaning services with documentation.

Can damaged IBC totes be repaired?

Yes! Many issues like leaky valves, bent cages, damaged pallets, and minor cracks can be repaired. Our repair services can often restore totes to full functionality at a fraction of replacement cost. Major inner bottle damage typically requires replacement.

What repairs do you offer?

We offer valve replacement/repair, cage straightening and welding, pallet replacement, gasket replacement, cap replacement, and professional cleaning. Turnaround is typically 1-3 days. Contact us for a repair estimate - often much cheaper than replacement.

How should I store IBC totes?

Store IBCs in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight when possible. UV exposure can degrade HDPE over time. If storing outdoors, consider dark-colored totes or protective covers. Keep valves closed to prevent contamination. Don't stack beyond manufacturer limits.

How do I winterize my IBC totes?

In Louisiana, hard freezes are rare but possible. For water-containing totes, leave some room for expansion if freezing is possible. Move to protected areas if feasible. Chemical-containing totes should be checked for freezing points. Consider insulated covers for temperature-sensitive contents.
